Heads up from the Arctic! 🌍❄️
Earlier this week, aboard Air Force One, US President Donald Trump surprised the world by saying he’d circle back to his long-discussed idea: annexing Greenland, the massive, ice-covered island that’s an autonomous territory of Denmark. His remarks came just a day after US special forces took a bold step in Venezuela, injecting fresh jitters about whether the US might try something similar in the Arctic.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen didn’t mince words on Facebook: 'Threats, pressure, and talk of annexation have no place between friends. Enough is enough. No more fantasies about annexation.' His firm stance was backed by Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who called the idea 'nonsense' and urged the US to stop the threats against a close ally.
Not stopping there, several European leaders voiced support for Denmark and Greenland:
- Finland’s President Alexander Stubb: 'No one decides for Greenland and Denmark but Greenland and Denmark themselves. Our Nordic friend Denmark has our full support.'
- Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul highlighted NATO ties, noting Greenland’s defense falls under the alliance thanks to Denmark’s membership.
- UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stressed that 'the future for Greenland is for Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark.'
- French Foreign Ministry spokesman Pascal Confavreux said 'Borders cannot be changed by force.'
Meanwhile, back in the US, Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland in December 2025, a move that fueled speculation about Washington’s Arctic ambitions.
