Hey fam! This Monday (Jan 5, 2026), the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting to discuss that wild US military operation in Venezuela. On Jan 3, US forces launched strikes in Caracas, arrested President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and flew them to New York. 😲
Colombia kicked off the session, asking the UN to step in. Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo briefed the council on behalf of UN chief António Guterres, who warned of possible spikes in instability, cross-border fallout, and a risky new precedent for how states handle each other.
Guterres pointed out that the UN Charter – basically the UN's rulebook – bans using force against another country's sovereignty (aka its right to run its own affairs). He urged everyone to dial down tensions and avoid a wider clash.
He made a heartfelt call for all Venezuelan groups to engage in an inclusive, democratic dialogue in which every sector of society can shape their future ✊.
Beyond Venezuela, the UN chief asked neighbouring states and the global community to stick together in solidarity and peaceful coexistence. It's a reminder that in our connected world, one hotspot can send ripples from Latin America to Asia.
Finally, Guterres said the UN stands ready to back any effort that helps Venezuelans find a peaceful path forward. Let's hope cooler heads prevail and dialogue wins over force! 🌍🤝
