On January 6, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump sent shockwaves through global media by suggesting the U.S. should acquire Greenland for national security purposes. 🌐❄️
His comments came right after the recent U.S. military operation against Venezuela, where Trump said the move was necessary to protect American interests abroad.
Diao Daming, deputy director of the National Academy of Development and Strategy at Renmin University of China, warned this approach could split the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He called it “a betrayal and fragmentation of the U.S. alliance system” and “a grave violation of international law and international norms.”
At the 2025 NATO leaders’ summit in The Hague, members reiterated Article 5, which says an attack on one is an attack on all. Taking aim at Greenland, administered by Denmark (also a NATO member), risks creating deep divisions and testing whether allies will uphold their defense commitments.
Is this just another Trump power play or a real strategy? 🤔
