📰 Tensions spike in Sudan’s Kordofan region, where communities are caught in a deadly cycle of violence. According to the UN, more than 65,000 people have fled their homes since October 2025, and the numbers keep climbing.
Situation Update
Between October 25 and December 30, 2025, an estimated 65,000 civilians were displaced across multiple areas of Kordofan, UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric reported. As 2026 began, the pace of flight accelerated:
- Dec 31, 2025 – Jan 4, 2026: Nearly 1,000 people uprooted from Quoz locality, Kadugli town, and Berdab village in South Kordofan.
- Jan 5, 2026: Around 2,000 residents forced to flee Um Dam Haj Ahmed locality in North Kordofan.
Drone Strike in El Obeid
On January 6, a drone attack in El Obeid, North Kordofan’s capital, allegedly killed 13 civilians, including children. These shocking losses underscore the urgent need for protection.
UN’s Call to Action
“We urge an immediate cessation of hostilities and the protection of civilians,” Dujarric stressed, adding that the UN is pushing for “rapid, safe and sustained humanitarian access” to deliver vital aid. Humanitarian access means creating secure routes for food, medical supplies, and shelter materials to reach those in need.
Why It Matters
For us in South and Southeast Asia, this crisis is a reminder that conflict-driven displacement can strike any community. 🌍 Young activists and professionals can help amplify the call for peace and safe aid corridors by sharing reliable updates and supporting organizations working on the ground.
Stay informed, stay empathetic, and let’s keep the conversation alive. 💙
