Greenlanders Push Back Against Trump’s Takeover Threat 😤

Greenland’s political parties recently slammed President Trump’s threat to seize their mineral-rich island. They insisted the decision about their future belongs only to Greenlanders.

In a joint statement, leaders declared: “We don’t want to be Americans, we don’t want to be Danish, we want to be Greenlanders.” 😤

Local voices in the capital, Nuuk, echoed the sentiment. Fisherman Julius Nielsen told AFP: “American, no! We were a colony for so many years… We’re not ready to be colonised again.”

Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953 and won home rule in 1979. While independence remains a long-term goal for some, many residents prefer a careful approach.

Analysts say Greenland’s vast deposits of rare earth minerals, oil and gas have sparked a modern resource scramble in the Arctic. President Trump warned this week: “We’re not going to have Russia or China occupy Greenland… So we’re going to be doing something with Greenland, either the nice way or the more difficult way.”

Earlier this week, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian urged: “We urge the US to stop using the so-called 'China threat' as a pretext for itself to seek selfish gains.” Aaja Chemnitz, Greenland’s representative in the Danish parliament, accused Trump of spreading false claims.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that any use of force would undermine NATO’s transatlantic bonds and post-war security frameworks, calling it a risk too big to take.

From Nuuk to Jakarta and Dhaka, young people are watching closely as Greenlanders stand up for self-determination and Arctic stewardship. ✊🌍
