Somalia Cuts Ties with UAE Over Sovereignty Concerns

Did you catch the headline? Somalia just dropped all its deals with the UAE, scrapping port operations and defense pacts in a bold move to protect its sovereignty. 🚨

Earlier this week, Somalia’s Council of Ministers announced they’re canceling every partnership with the UAE – covering strategic ports like Berbera, Bosaso and Kismayo, plus all security and defense arrangements. They say there’s “credible evidence” of hostile actions that threaten their national unity and political independence.

Why does this matter? Imagine your favorite startup’s investor suddenly calling the shots on your business plan. That’s how Somali officials feel about the UAE’s growing influence, especially in breakaway regions like Somaliland. Despite not being internationally recognized, Somaliland’s port of Berbera is a hotspot for UAE investment – DP World has a 30-year concession there worth $442 million.

UAE investments in East Africa are huge – around $47 billion over the past decade, about 60% of all Gulf capital flowing into the region. 💸 Now, Somalia’s federal government is reasserting control, sparking questions about how semi-autonomous states like Puntland and Jubaland, which also have close UAE ties, will react.

Tensions ramped up when reports said a Yemeni separatist leader flew out of Yemen via Berbera port after skipping talks in Riyadh. Somalia’s immigration authority even launched an investigation into that “unauthorized” flight. If true, it’s another thorn in Somalia’s side about its airspace and airports being used without permission.

So what’s next? Will the federal government’s bold stand reshape alliances in the Horn of Africa? Will regional states push back? The coming weeks will be a rollercoaster for geopolitics fiends. Stay tuned! 🌍
