On Tuesday night (Jan. 13, 2026), a Hamas delegation led by Khalil al-Hayya landed in Cairo to kick off talks with Egyptian officials on the Gaza ceasefire. 🤝✈️
Here’s what they’re aiming for:
- Phase 1: wrap up the first phase by opening the Rafah crossing both ways — so people and aid can move freely 🚦
- Phase 2: fast-track the second phase by forming the transitional administrative committee and completing Israeli withdrawal
They’re also set to meet key Palestinian faction leaders to discuss on-the-ground shifts in Gaza and the West Bank. Under the October 2025 agreement, Gaza would be run by a team of Palestinian technocrats overseen by an international Board of Peace — and Hamas must disarm and step back from formal governance.
The Rafah crossing, the main link between Egypt and Gaza, has been mostly closed since May 2024 when Israeli forces took control of the Palestinian side. Before then, it was Gaza’s primary exit and a vital aid corridor. Israel has said it will reopen Rafah once Hamas returns the remaining hostages.
These Cairo talks could shape the next chapter in Gaza — stay tuned for updates! 👀🕊️
