South Korean Court to Rule on Yoon’s Insurrection Trial Verdict on Feb 19

Heads up! A Seoul court is set to deliver its verdict in former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s insurrection trial on February 19, local media reported this Wednesday ⚖️.

The special counsel stunned many by requesting the death penalty earlier this week, accusing Yoon of orchestrating an insurrection when he declared emergency martial law on December 3, 2024, despite no formal war or equivalent crisis. The National Assembly revoked the order just hours later.

Last month, the Seoul Central District Court merged three related trials involving eight suspects — Yoon plus seven top military and police officials charged with critical roles in the alleged coup attempt.

Yoon’s legal saga began in January 2025, when he was indicted under detention as a suspected ringleader of the insurrection. A few months later, in April 2025, the constitutional court upheld a motion to impeach him, officially removing him from office — a first in modern South Korean history.

Next month’s verdict could set a historic precedent. Stay tuned for updates! 👀
