China Urges Restraint to Cool Iran Tensions at UN

Yesterday at an emergency UN Security Council meeting, Sun Lei, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, called on all parties to exercise restraint and avoid pushing the Middle East into deeper instability. 🕊️

Speaking out against threats or use of force, Sun stressed that Iran’s internal affairs should be decided by the Iranian people themselves. He noted recent weeks saw repeated open threats from the United States, ramping up regional tensions.

Sun Lei underlined that China always upholds the UN Charter — essentially the UN’s rulebook — and international law, opposing the idea of imposing one country’s will on another or returning to a "law of the jungle." He said sovereign equality and non-interference are at the heart of modern international relations.

China, he added, supports safeguarding Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, and urges the global community to back Iran’s efforts to overcome current challenges while keeping its society stable.

Most regional states have voiced strong concern about military confrontation and hope disputes get solved through dialogue. Sun Lei called on all sides to listen to these warnings and take steps that promote peace and stability in the region.

"Peace and development are the shared aspirations of people everywhere," Sun said. "History shows that force, pressure and interference only breed more conflict and hatred. No country has the right to decide another’s fate, and no one can place themselves above international law."
