Spain’s Worst Rail Disaster in Over a Decade
This past Sunday night, two high-speed trains – one operated by Iryo, the other by Alvia – collided near Adamuz in Cordoba province, leaving at least 39 dead and 122 injured. It’s the deadliest rail accident in Spain since 2013.
Survivors recounted the chaos: “The train tilted and everything went dark – I only heard screams,” said a young woman being treated in Adamuz after heading back to Madrid.
Rescue teams battled a remote single-track road to reach the crash site, slowing ambulance access. Of the roughly 400 passengers on board, 48 remain hospitalized and 12 are in intensive care.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez cut short his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos to visit the site on Monday. Transport Minister Oscar Puente warned, “The death toll has risen to 39 and is not yet definitive.”
As investigators probe possible causes – from track faults to signaling glitches – rail experts are urging a full safety review of Spain’s high-speed network to prevent another tragedy. 💔
