Chile Wildfires Claim 18 Lives as State of Emergency Declared

Chile is grappling with devastating wildfires in its south-central region. On Sunday, January 18, President Gabriel Boric confirmed the death toll has reached 18—and warned it could climb. Communities are reeling as blazes destroy homes and livelihoods. 🔥

In Biobio, around 300 houses have burned so far, but officials say the final count may exceed 1,000. Curfews are now in place in Penco, Nacimiento, and Laja. Lirquen, where 80% of the area is aflame, remains under an indefinite lockdown. 🏠🚫

The National Forestry Corporation reports 14 active wildfires under red alert, with over 24,000 hectares scorched across Chile. The biggest blaze near Concepcion has consumed more than 10,600 hectares, leaving forests and farmland in ashes. 🌳⚠️

To tackle the crisis, Boric has declared a state of catastrophe in the Nuble and Biobio regions. Emergency teams are mobilizing, and local communities are rallying to support those affected. Stay safe and follow official updates if you live nearby. ❤️

We'll keep you posted as the situation evolves. 🙏
