🚆 On Tuesday, a commuter train near Gelida, about 40km west of Barcelona, plowed into the rubble of a collapsed retaining wall. This tragic accident left one person dead and 37 others injured, five of them seriously.
Interior Minister Nuria Parlon said the wall "collapsed onto the tracks," causing the train to smash into the debris. Spanish rail operator Adif reported that a recent storm triggered the collapse, prompting the suspension of Catalan commuter services as inspections get underway.
This incident comes just two days after a high-speed rail collision in Andalusia on Sunday that killed 42 people, marking Spain’s deadliest rail disaster in over a decade. Earlier on Tuesday, Spain’s king and queen visited the Andalusia site and survivors, as more than 120 passengers remain injured.
With extreme weather events on the rise, questions are mounting over infrastructure resilience and rail safety in Spain. For commuters, staying tuned to mobile alerts and real-time updates has never been more crucial.
Our hearts go out to everyone affected. Stay safe and keep an eye on official channels for updates. 🙏
